Last week's speaker
June 28 Speaker & Title of Program:  Dan Kittilson-The Value of Clean Water
Main points of program:  Though Hubbard Co. is surrounded by lake with AIS, our lakes are mostly free of infestation.  37% of Hubb. Co. property has water influence.  Zebra Mussels are found in the following counties:  Douglas (33), Ottertail (24), Becker (12), Beltrami (9), and Cass (9).  Starry Stonewart (tiny white star-shaped) is becoming an increasing problem; it grows 10-12’ down from the surface and kills native species and impedes recreation.  It has been found under bunk trailers which supports thorough inspections.  It is not true that infestations in large lakes are the source of spreading infestations.  It spreads from docks, lifts and resident boats.  Studies have shown that there is a 13% reduction in property values once a lake has AIS.  From 2012-17 Hubbard Co. and city have received over $183,000 from the state to combat AIS.  COLA has spent over $426,000 in boat inspections.  All are urged to be an “army of eyes” for watching for AIS; early detection is key in preventing its spread;  For more information:  www.hubbardcolamn.org.
